Best Game Where Your Character Continues to Advance
When it comes to multiplayer games, fans often gravitate toward two elements: balance, and options. How much fun a player can have in a multiplayer title depends on how balanced the metagame is. That balance is further affected by the options present with the game itself.
In fighting games, this can often lead to a soft cap of around 45 characters. But there are some games which seem to scoff at the very idea of a limit on the number of characters, presenting alternative rosters that start at 40 and work their way up. Although players may not test out every character, they'll never lack options.
10/10 Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Features One Of Tekken's Biggest Rosters At Nearly 60 Characters
Once a focused arcade release, the Tekken Tag series is the ultimate fanservice game for Tekken fans. The game doesn't try to make any sense of the existing story and instead takes place in an alternate universe. Here, Heihachi is holding yet another King of Iron Fist tournament, which draws in fighters from all over the globe.
Without having to answer canon questions, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is free to include every character in Tekken up to that point, resulting in a roster of 59 characters in the game's console release. These games are such a tremendous undertaking it's not surprising there are huge gaps between their releases.
9/10 Mortal Kombat Armageddon Offered Over 60 Fighters For Kombat
The Mortal Kombat universe has always been known for offering tons of characters to choose from. The 3D Mortal Kombat games in particular loads their rosters down with several characters that only the most hardcore fans remember. With Mortal Kombat Armageddon, Midway Games boasts a roster of 62 different fighters for players to choose from.
What's especially surprising is that Armageddon only had two brand-new fighters, with everyone else coming from older games. Armageddon represented the last of the Mortal Kombat titles until the franchise received a reboot in 2011 with Mortal Kombat 9.
8/10 Call of Duty Warzone Has Over 60 Operators To Choose From
When people talk about the characters present, Call of Duty feels even more ridiculous than most battle royales. Not only do characters play identical with few differences between them, but the game is in first-person. Players can't even see their character. However, none of this has stopped Warzone from selling dozens of operators to people, so they can enjoy Warzone's new map.
Many of these operators come from Call of Duty's past, but a few of them are special characters. The game has introduced characters like Rambo, John McClane, and even Snoop Dogg to its roster — available for anyone who's willing to drop $20, or 2400 in-game COD Points.
7/10 King Of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match Has Nearly 70 Characters
Since King of Fighters requires a bunch of three-person teams for their tournaments, their games always have massive rosters. But King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match takes things to a new level. This game has 66 characters on its roster, for a staggering 18 different teams, along with three EX characters and eight different boss characters.
By comparison, the recently launched King of Fighters XV has only 39 playable characters, and will add another four teams for a total of 51 characters in all. While XV is selling additional teams, Unlimited Match comes with all its characters at launch.
6/10 Super Smash Bros Ultimate Has Almost 90 Fighters
Super Smash Bros Ultimate's tagline was "Everyone Is Here," and they meant it. Smash Bros Ultimate might have the largest roster of any fighting game that takes competitive balance remotely serious. The game launched with 74 characters to begin with, incorporating characters from all of their old games to make this was the "ultimate" version of Smash Bros.
But Nintendowasn't done there, as they continued adding characters until there were an additional fifteen crossing over from different franchises. While fans might have gone a bit wild asking for Goku from Dragon Ball Z, most fans were satisfied with the final roster, which grabbed everyone from Persona 5's Joker to Tekken's Kazuya.
5/10 DBZ: Tenkaichi Budokai 3 Has Nearly 100 Different Characters
There's no better straightforward simulation of Dragon Ball Z than the Tenkaichi Budokai series. Most other Dragon Ball Z games have been trying to match up to this series for years, but they'll often lack in fanservice even if they make up for it with their combat.
The Tenkaichi Budokai series was notorious for adding everyone into their games. The last title in the series had 98 characters, all with access to their different forms which made for 160 characters in all. It was a massive, daunting game that allowed players to create whatever dream battles they wanted.
4/10 DOTA 2 Offers Over 120 Different Heroes
DOTA 2 had been around a long time and constantly added new heroes since its creation. Even though the game originally launched in beta with less than 50 characters, more than a decade passed — bringing several changes with it.
In that time, they've added in pre-existing heroes from the original Defense of the Ancients game as well as some new characters. The game's roster has swelled to have 123 heroes. Since then, the number of heroes added to the game has shrunk considerably, with only one or two heroes being added every year.
3/10 SMITE Features Over 120 Gods From Different Pantheons
One of the few MOBAs anyone talks about outside League and DOTA 2, it's not a surprise SMITE offers players a huge roster. Originally released by Titan Forge Games in 2014, the game puts players in control of a god or goddess from a different pantheon.
Even though every player starts out with ten gods in their pantheon, they can acquire more as they continue to advance through the game. However, only a dozen are available at any given time. In the eight years since the game launched, SMITE has introduced over 121 gods.
Riot's League of Legends game has been a monster success in the world for years now. Alongside DOTA 2, it's all but smothered every other MOBA out of existence, and fans rarely want to play anything else. Starting out with a humble roster of 40 champions, League would include a plethora of new characters over the next decade.
These days, League boasts nearly 160 characters in its roster. Unlike DOTA 2, Riot adds around five to six characters every year, so there's always someone new for players to test out. The latest character is Bel'Veth, a creature of the void pretending to be human.
1/10 Fortnite Has Nearly 1200 Different Character Skins
Depending on the person, Fortnite either has only one character or almost 1200. They have only one character because all Fortnite characters ultimately play the same — they hold a gun, they use a pickaxe to break down buildings into materials, and do appropriated dances Epic somehow gets money for.
But for the people who can look past that, Fortnite has hundreds of characters added since the game became popular. They have their own original characters, but they also have famous ones from different crossovers. Most recently, Epic added Naruto characters Hinata, Gaara, Itachi, and Orochimaru. Anyone can come out of that battle bus next.
